The Swedish Government has appointed Charlotte von Essen new Director General and Head of the Swedish Security Service. She will be assuming this post on 1 October 2021.
“I have accepted the post of Head of the Swedish Security Service with pride. It is a great honour and at the same time a great challenge, in view of the security concerns we are currently facing,” says Charlotte von Essen.
Charlotte von Essen is currently Deputy Head of the Swedish Security Service, a post she has held since May 2017.
“The threat to the security of Sweden has increased, and our Security Service assesses that this threat will continue to increase in the coming years. In order to keep this threat at bay, our Service must always stay one step ahead. To do this, we must be permitted and able to use up-to-date technological solutions, ensure that we obtain and maintain the necessary competence and skills, and expand our Service’s national and international cooperation,” explains Charlotte von Essen.
Charlotte von Essen has a comprehensive background and experience of the judicial system and the work of the Swedish Security Service. She has for example been Chief Judge and Head of the Uppsala Administrative Court, and Director General for Legal Affairs at the Swedish Ministry of Justice.
“The Swedish Security Service is responsible for ensuring that what must not happen does not happen, and our staff is constantly working to safeguard Sweden and our democratic values. In light of the current situation however, more people must help to keep Sweden safe,” emphasises Charlotte von Essen.
Charlotte von Essen is taking over after Klas Friberg, who has been Director General since 1 March 2018.
“It has been a great honour to head the Swedish Security Service and take part in the important work of protecting Sweden. I am now in my fourth year as Director General of the Swedish Security Service and I have always enjoyed the work, our remit, and the colleagues I have had the pleasure to work with. For personal reasons however, I requested earlier this year that the Government end my appointment prematurely,” says Klas Friberg. “The Government then decided very wisely to appoint Charlotte von Esssen new Director General of the Swedish Security Service. She is an excellent choice to lead the Swedish Security Service into the future,” says Klas Friberg.
Klas Friberg will be leaving his post on 20 September 2021, when his appointment will end, at his request, and he will retire.
Charlotte von Essen has a background as Assessor at the Stockholm Administrative Court of Appeal. In 2001, she took up a post as Legal Adviser at the Swedish Ministry of Justice. In the autumn of 2009 she was appointed Deputy Director General and in January 2012 she became Director General for Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Justice. Between 2016 and 2017, Charlotte von Essen served as Chief Judge and Head of the Uppsala Administrative Court.
